Aftercare guide

Tattoo aftercare — the complete healing guide

A new tattoo takes 2–4 weeks to heal on the surface and up to 3 months in the deeper layers of the skin. How you care for it in the first 14 days determines how vivid, sharp and even it stays for life. Here's exactly what to do — and what to avoid — step by step.

1. The first 2–4 hours

The bandage or clear film applied at the end of the session protects the fresh wound and absorbs excess plasma and ink.

  • Keep the bandage / film on for at least 2 hours (or as long as I told you at the end of the session).
  • Don't touch the tattoo with unwashed hands. Don't let anyone else touch it.
  • Avoid tight clothing that rubs the area — choose something loose and cotton.

2. Washing the tattoo

Once the bandage comes off, proper washing is the single most important routine for the first week.

  • Wash your hands with warm water and soap before touching the tattoo.
  • Use lukewarm (NOT hot) water and a neutral, fragrance-free liquid soap (pH-neutral, mildly antibacterial).
  • Clean gently with your fingertips — no sponge, no washcloth, no rubbing.
  • Rinse well and pat dry with a clean paper towel. Do NOT use a fabric towel.
  • Repeat 2–3 times a day for the first 5 days.

3. Moisturizing

Healing skin needs moisture, but in a very thin layer — suffocated under cream, it'll develop thick scabs and weep.

  • After washing, apply a very thin layer of a tattoo-specific cream (Bepanthen, Hustle Butter, Tattoo Goo) — just enough to make the skin shine.
  • Apply 3–4 times a day for the first 7 days, then reduce to 1–2 times a day for one more week.
  • After the scabs are gone (around 10–14 days), switch to a regular fragrance-free moisturizer.

4. What to avoid completely

  • Do NOT enter a pool, the sea, a jacuzzi, a sauna or a bathtub for at least 14 days.
  • Take short, lukewarm showers — water shouldn't run directly over the tattoo for minutes.
  • Do NOT expose the tattoo to direct sun or to a tanning bed for at least 4 weeks.
  • Do NOT shave the area until it's fully healed (about 4 weeks).
  • Do NOT scratch and do NOT pick at scabs or peeling skin — they'll fall off on their own.
  • Heavy exercise, heavy sweating and dirty clothes — avoid for the first 7–10 days.

5. After healing — long-term protection

The biggest enemy of an old tattoo is the sun. Ink fades under UV exactly like any other color exposed to it.

  • After 4–6 weeks, apply SPF 50 over the tattoo every time it's exposed to sun.
  • Moisturize daily — dry skin makes colors look duller.
  • Strong retinols and acid serums can fade the ink; apply them around the tattoo, not on it.

What healing looks like, day by day

  1. Day 1–2

The tattoo is swollen, slightly red and tender. The skin may weep a bit of plasma and ink — that's normal. Wash 2–3 times a day.

  2. Day 3–6

A thin scab starts to form. The tattoo will look more matte. Keep washing + moisturizing lightly.

  3. Day 7–14

The skin peels in thin colored strips (do NOT pull them off). A shiny new layer appears underneath — colors will look pale for a week.

  4. Day 14–28

The surface is healed but the deeper layers are still working. The skin returns to its normal texture and the colors stabilize.

  5. Week 4+

The tattoo is fully healed on the surface. Keep applying SPF 50 every sun exposure to keep it vivid for years.

Warning signs — call a doctor

Normal healing involves mild redness, swelling and itching. The following are NOT normal and need medical evaluation:

  • Fever above 38°C in the first few days.
  • Redness that spreads beyond the outline of the tattoo after day 3.
  • Yellow-green pus or a bad smell.
  • Severe, throbbing pain that gets worse instead of better.
  • Rash, intense itching or blisters — possible allergic reaction to the ink.
Frequently asked questions

Quick answers

How long until a tattoo is fully healed?
On the surface, 2–4 weeks. In the deeper skin layers, full healing takes 2–3 months. The tattoo looks its best after about 30 days.
Which cream should I use?
Bepanthen, Hustle Butter or Tattoo Goo are all tested options. The key is to apply a THIN layer, not a thick blanket. Avoid creams with fragrance, lanolin or petroleum in the first days.
Can I shower?
Yes, after the bandage comes off (at least 2 hours after the session). Short, lukewarm showers, no direct water jet on the tattoo. Skip baths, jacuzzis and swimming for 14 days.
Why does it look like it faded?
Between days 7 and 14 the top layer of skin peels and a fresh matte layer appears underneath. After 2–3 weeks the colors return to their final intensity.
Can I work out?
Light activity (walking, exercise without heavy sweating) is fine after 3–4 days. Gym, long runs or swimming — at least 10–14 days off.
When can I expose the tattoo to the sun?
After 4 weeks, always with SPF 50. Tanning beds are off-limits for the first month. Long-term, the sun is the main reason tattoos fade.
Do I need a touch-up session?
For most new pieces, no — wait until it's fully healed (4–6 weeks) and we'll only fix small uneven spots if we see any. Touch-ups are included in the original price for work done with me.
